Paleros, a picturesque small town located on the west coast of mainland Greece, is evocatively situated in a breathtaking backdrop of beautiful and serene vistas and the crystal clear waters of the Ionian Sea. Olive trees, vineyards and pine trees extend down to the spectacular sandy beaches. Beachfront bars, restaurants and caes are within walking distance. Many of the old traditions of the town are kept alive and unchanged by the local population today, giving the village its own unique character. Time has a completely different meaning in this pleasant and charming atmosphere and relaxed path of life of Paleros and its traditional tavernas and small alleys. Paleros, is very centrally located in the area making it ideal for short excursions to the adjacent island of Lefkada, separated from the mainland by a 50 meters’ floating bridge. Preveza, Parga, Messolongi and many other places of interest can be reached very easily by car and offer wonderful destinations for daily excursions. Within short drives you may visit some important archaeological sites of the country, and enjoy trekking in beautiful scenery.

Hiking tour in Paleros
Many of our clients, who visit Paleros regularly, choose to stay there in May or September so that they can enjoy the experience of discovering local lifestyles and new parts of the island on foot without the stronger heat of the high summer months. We have therefore arranged two special walking holidays in these months for those of you wanting a more personalised introduction to Paleros’s hidden beauty.
Daily walks (twice a week), averaging five hours per walk in total, will introduce Paleros ’s more inquisitive visitor to the Paleros’s history, mythology, churches, vineyards, beaches, olive presses, windmills, flora and fauna. At a relaxed pace there will be breaks to enjoy stunning views and lunch (paid locally) at a traditional taverns.
Although most walks are rated easy to moderate, participants should be in good health and of reasonable fitness. For moderate and difficult walks walking boots are required and sturdy shoes or trainers are recommended for shorter trails. On each walk bring a sun hat, water and sun cream and long trousers are recommended.
Sites to walk:
1. Agios Dimitrios
At the foot of the Acarnanian Mountains or Tsirika as it is often called, by the locals, settles St.Dimitrios Monastery.
Way: Hotel – Saint Dimitrios – Saint Nikolaos – Cave Katsantoni-Ancient Palero.
In the return food and relax in the point of Saint Nikolaos.
2. Kekropoula
The first visit is to the ancient city of Kekropoula, part of Paleros municipality and a place where King Kekhropa once ruled. These ancient monuments serve as a reminder as well as other ancient ruins of Kekropias, like the castle of Kechropoula. One can also see the gate tower of the double enclosure of Akamaniki town. Further recent archaeological diggings have revealed the particular importance of the discovery of the ancient city of Kekropia. Objects of historical value can be seen on display. In the return food and relax in the tavern of Pogonia village.
On each walk bring a sun hat, water and sun cream and long trousers are recommended. If you prefer to have a picnic walking please take lunch basket with you.
Bicycle Tours
Dionysos, the son of Zeus and Semele, bestowed on making the gift of wine so that men might forget their sorrows”. For wine and nature lovers let’s take a bicycling tour to Gerokostopoulos Vineyard. After breakfast, with the bicycles and helmets provided by Paleros Travel let start a different tour for different people… We start at 10:30 and arrived there at about 11:30am having an interesting tour of the vineyard.
Gerokostopoulos vineyard situated in a small hill a few km outside of Paleros close to the ancient ruins of Paleros named ’’Kecropoula’’ and facing out over the peaceful Paleros area. It is a privately owned and well taken care vineyard of 5 hectares with distinguished varieties which prevails in uses exclusively grapes of these varietals to make wine.
The vineyard is a nature environment full of wild life specifically nests of stone hocks. The soil of these hillsides derives from alluviums of surrounding aquatic area, while the soft winter and warm summer created an ideal ecosystem for the vineyards cultivation. The wines of the wine factory are produced from grapes which are cultivated in a biological way .We’ll be informed about the aging process of wines at one of the wine-vaults inside the winery that one will be visiting at the time and of course have the opportunity to try the Union’s wines under the factory’s enologist’s guidance.
The special virtues of the Paleros region weather from its being successful in creating a subtle balance between the density of vine stocks and the good quality of the soil. Additionally, the cellar-masters are skilled at blending the region’s wines from diverse vineyards and different varieties of grapes and they then mature the wine.
The principal varieties used in Gerokostopoulos wines are:
• Merlot • Cabernet • Roditis • Agiorgitiko • Malagouza and Moshato.
To end this delightful tour we had a taste of their white wine, it will be exquisite!
